The World Conference of Mayors Operation RAC It Up

The World Conference of Mayors' Operation RAC It Up Program is a gun violence prevention program designed to enhance firearm safety awareness and prevent accidental shootings amongst children by providing free firearm safety kits to all families with firearms in their home. 

As of June 26th, 2024 the United States Surgeon General declared gun violence a public health crisis. Firearm injuries and deaths are unfortunately, public health issues that disproportionately affect Communities of Color due to the lack of resources available to them and the lack of education received about firearms and firearm safety.  

Detroit has seen a surge in incidents where children are accessing firearms and unintentionally injuring themselves or others. Just over the Fourth of July weekend, 6 young people were shot in the city of Detroit. Operation RAC It Up promotes more responsible firearm ownership. If a firearm is not in use, it should be locked away and inaccessible to children.  Through investments in safe storage and education, The World Conference of Mayors, Team RAC and its Community Partners will provide an instant and practical take home solution which includes: 

1. “The RAC”--- A Mountable Trigger Lock 

• Makes safe storage devices easily accessible to families that want to secure firearms and prevent unauthorized accesss
• Optional free installation service 

2. Firearm Safety & Injury Prevention Educational Materials

• Pamphlets and Brochures on firearm safety best practices, emphasizing the importance of secure storage and safe handling.
• Step-by-step guidelines on how to talk to children about guns and ways to teach them how to respond in case they encounter a firearm

3. Community Resources

• Financial Literacy Books and Workbooks
• Access to Financial Coaches
• Access to Mental Health Specialists 
• Access to Support Groups
