According to the CDC, approximately one half of deaths caused by unintentional firearm injury among children and adolescents occurred at their home; playing with or showing the firearm to another person was the most common precipitator. Overall, firearms used in unintentional injury deaths were often stored both loaded and unlocked and were commonly accessed from nightstands and other sleeping areas.
As of 1999, Project ChildSafe, a program ran by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) has distributed over 41 million cable-style gun locks through partnerships with over 15,000 law enforcement agencies and 13,000 organizational partners.
In 2023, we've seen over 400 unintentional shootings by children, marking the highest number of such incidents.
This has forced us to ask the question.... why are children still dying as a result of accessing unsecured firearms? When safe storage devices are available for firearm owner's to pick up at their local precinct for free?
We believe it is because firearm owners are not using them. Cable-locks are obsolete when securing firearms. Cable-locks can be easily broken as demonstrated in the video below. Cable-locks can also be stolen along with a firearm.
Operation RAC It Up is proposing a new standard in firearm safety. The RAC is a mountable firearm storage device that can hold up to 3 firearms at once. The RAC can be mounted on any surface in a discrete location and firearm owners can rest assured that no unauthorized user can gain access to their firearms. Our program offers the RAC free of charge to recipients of our firearm safety kits. Each firearm safety kit includes literature for kids and adults to prevent firearm injury and generational trauma.
Operation RAC It Up knows that gun violence in general is caused by a lack of education and resources available. Therefore, in addition to firearm safety, each firearm safety kit comes with financial literacy resources, mental health resources, conflict resolution resources, books on investing in real estate and books on investing in life insurance.
Our goal is to develop the relationships, secure the funding and establish the infrastructure to have Operation RAC It Up Firearm Safety Kits distributed for free at local precincts and community centers around Michigan and later all 50 states. The NSSF has already showed us the path, we want to refine and enrich it with more resources and a stronger solution.
How you can help
- Raise awareness around responsible firearm ownership and safe storage practices. Guns should locked away when not in use and stored unloaded, separately from ammunition.
- Donate $200 to provide a free Firearm Safety Kit to a family who wants to be more responsible
- Advocate on our behalf and contact Detroit City Council and Detroit Police Department. Let them know you want to be able to pick up a free firearm safety kit from Operation RAC It Up
- Sponsor multiple families and provide them with a free Firearm Safety Kit
- Connect with our team if you're able to push us towards our goal in other ways or just want to get involved!
