Michael B’s Café — Building Futures, One Cup at a Time
WHO WE ARE:
Michael B’s Café is more than a nonprofit coffee shop—it’s a movement of inclusion, opportunity, and purpose. Inspired by Michael B, a vibrant young man with autism, and his mother, Alicia Carlisle, Michael B’s Café is a labor of love, built on the belief that everyone deserves a chance to thrive.
With a dedicated board of directors, community partners, friends, and family, this mission has become a shared vision. It takes a village—and that village is growing every day. Together, we are creating a safe, empowering space where adults with special needs—what Michael proudly calls the “All Abilities Community”—can learn, work, and shine.
WHAT WE DO:
Michael B’s Café will be a place where coffee and baked goods are served with pride by adults who often face limited opportunities in the workforce. Through a groundbreaking partnership with Wayne County Community College District (WCCCD), participants will enroll in life skills courses, earn college credits, and receive hands-on job training.
Michael B’s Café is becoming a true hub of collaboration, growth, and community support. We are especially proud to partner with our local Public Safety Department and the Michigan State Police to develop a specialized training program that teaches officers how to safely and effectively de-escalate situations involving individuals with challenges.
HOW WE’LL MAKE IT HAPPEN:
We are seeking a $100,000 donation from Rocket Mortgage to help us break ground on our $1.5 million building fund. This investment will transform a long-vacant building into a vibrant café, classroom, and community space where lives are changed daily. Every brick laid and every dollar donated brings us closer to creating a future where all abilities are celebrated.
WHY IT MATTERS:
Today, only 18% of adults with developmental disabilities are employed. Those who are, often face barriers to meaningful, fulfilling work. Michael B’s Café will change that. It will offer dignity, independence, and a sense of belonging to individuals who are ready to contribute but simply need the opportunity.
As Michael says, “We all have abilities—we just need a place to use them.”
Your support will make this place a reality.
