Lighthouse provides hope and support to thousands of families in need each year through emergency food distribution, emergency shelter, housing assistance programs, transitional housing programs, follow-up care, and more.

Lighthouse MI was formed in 2019 from the merger of two long-standing and esteemed community organizations: South Oakland Shelter (SOS) and Lighthouse of Oakland County (LOC). Both SOS and LOC launched over thirty years ago to address critical gaps in basic services, primarily food and shelter. Over time, they evolved to tackle the deeper issues of poverty and inequity, with a significant emphasis on affordable housing.

Building on a legacy of grassroots, community-driven solutions, Lighthouse currently provides a range of vital services - from emergency food distribution, to emergency shelter (including the county’s only youth shelter), to supportive services; additionally, in Pontiac, Lighthouse operates 286 affordable rental apartment units, single family homes, and duplexes and currently has 271 new affordable units under development in Oakland and Wayne County.
