Life Directions uses an innovative approach, a trauma education program, designed and implemented to address the root cause with Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) for its Peer Mentor and Peer Motivation Programs. It helps educators develop cohesive, supportive school environments and boost students’ success by keeping them in school and engaged in learning. Studies on SEL education revealed positive impact on school success and showed an 11% gain in academic achievement!
This pioneering approach is used to address the current pandemic which has influenced mental health issues from its prolonged uncertainty. It has created a crisis of Trauma for communities throughout the country. During this pivotal moment, Life Directions has the programs in place within Detroit Public Schools Community District and the community to help advance youth and young adults’ wellness and resilience initiatives. Our vision is for peers from 13-35 years of age who are rooted in positive values to inspire their peers who are struggling. Addressing SEL-TIC has been our hallmark since our beginnings.
Life Directions is committed to helping its youth and families improve their health outlook by addressing trauma and reducing this risk. We provide prevention services and resources for young adults to lead a purposeful life direction from quality education to meaningful enrichment for their families. We encourage lifelong educational opportunities, regardless of age.
