For the past year, I have been a part of the Development Team at United Community Family Services. In the process of telling the stories of the hundreds of families we serve, I've learned a lot about the immense and often hidden need in our own backyard.
Did you know that in Southeastern Michigan, more than 40 percent of families struggle to meet their basic needs? Many parents are forced to decide between feeding their children and paying for car repairs, purchasing a new winter coat and buying formula for their baby, or keeping the lights on and affording childcare.
For newcomer families who arrived recently with literally only the clothes on their backs, they often face these same challenges while also navigating language barriers, culture shock, and isolation.
Hearing these families' stories, it's easy to be overcome by a feeling of helplessness. What can we do in the face of such need generated by systems much greater than any one person?
I find comfort and direction in one of my favorite quotes: "Do not be overwhelmed by the enormity of the world's grief [...] It is not your job to finish the work, but neither are you free to abandon it."
If you are also feeling overwhelmed and looking for a way to help, I invite you to consider donating to United Community Family Services. Your donation could help feed 800+ families each month, provide household essentials for newcomer families, support new mothers through our Maternal Health Education Program, sponsor tutoring and STEAM learning for 50+ kids, and much more.
Any amount truly makes a difference. Thank you for your support!
