About Preemies of the Carolinas
Preemies of the Carolinas (POTC) is a non-profit organization founded by Jennifer Opferman in September 2015. The group supports children in North and South Carolina hospitals and expanded to Tennessee, primarily those staying in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU). Their first donation occurred in October 2015 at Novant Hemby Children’s Hospital in Charlotte, NC.
What they do:
- Provide essential handmade items—such as inspirational hearts, preemie hats, bibs, burp cloths, and blankets—to local NICUs for distribution to patients and families.
- Accept individual care package requests from parents, families, friends, or NICU staff, including requests from families across the nation.
How they work:
- A network of dedicated volunteers creates, collects, and delivers these items.
- Processes include sorting, washing, storing, packaging, and tailoring donations for specific hospital needs, special requests, or holidays.
- Volunteers also handle logistics such as delivery and shipping to both hospitals and individual families.
Preemies of the Carolinas continues to expand its support for NICU families with the help of its passionate volunteer base.
