Siena Literacy Center provides educational programming for adults in reading, math, English language, workforce development, GED preparation, and digital literacy. We believe that education helps create equity, empowering individuals to reach their potential as parents, wage earners, and community members.
Adult learners of all ages and backgrounds study at Siena. Each learner works weekly with a personal tutor or in small group classes. Lessons are tailored to meet learners' specific needs and goals. Learners have access to our computer lab and self-paced learning software that augments what they learn in their tutoring or class sessions. Siena also offers computer skills training and certification through the Northstar Digital Literacy program to the wider community.
Since 1995, Siena Literacy Center has served more than 2,700 learners from more than 21 countries. This past program year, Siena celebrated four GED graduates and another four Certified Nursing Assistant graduates. Nine students were inducted into the National Adult Education Honor Society, whose mission is to provide meaningful recognition to students, to improve their employment opportunities, to develop student ambassadors, and to create adult education awareness. And three students completed their courses of study after reaching their personal goals and achieving proficiency.
Learners study at Siena for reasons as diverse as they are:
🎓 Earn a GED
💰 Improve job skills and employability
📑 Practice filling out forms and applications
🌎 Take the U.S. citizenship test
📝 Prepare for other entry level exams
💻 Improve computer skills and digital literacy
💛 Become more involved in their community
🍎 Help their children with homework
📣 And so much more!
Learners at Siena have access to supportive services provided by our community resource navigator and social work interns. These services include lifelines like referrals for mental health counseling, access to health insurance and food assistance programs, transportation support, connections to childcare services, and other vital community resources. Our goal is to get ahead of challenges before they become emergencies, so learners can stay focused on their academic and career goals. Learners are assessed for supportive service needs during their enrollment process and offered support throughout the year.
We have learners waiting right now to be matched with volunteer tutors to help them reach their goals. If you have 2-3 hours a week to volunteer, YOU can make a difference in the life of one of these individuals. Siena provides all training and materials--no teaching experience necessary! In-person volunteers are needed in reading, math, and English as a second language. Sign up for an orientation today!
