Founded in 1937 by compassionate residents dedicated to championing the humane treatment of animals, Lake Humane Society has been a cornerstone of animal welfare in our community for over 85 years. In the late 1970s, animals were cared for on an outdoor property in Perry, Ohio, where pets lived outside year-round and caretakers resided in a modest home on-site.

In 1988, Lake Humane Society moved to its current location on Tyler Boulevard in Mentor, Ohio. This 8,000-square-foot facility provided much-needed space to care for more animals, including cats and small animals, and offer expanded services to the community. Along with the move, the organization adopted its current name, dropping “County” to clarify that Lake Humane Society does not receive government funding.

In 2014, we acquired an annex to create additional office space and support community programs like Auggie’s Pet Food Pantry and Meals on Wheels. Today, Lake Humane Society cares for over 1,800 animals annually, offering shelter, medical care, and a second chance at loving homes.

In late 2024, we embarked on a long-overdue renovation project—the first significant update to our shelter since the 1980s. These improvements focused on upgrading our dog kennels and showroom floors, ensuring a cleaner, safer, and more welcoming environment for our animals and visitors alike.

As we look to the future, Lake Humane Society remains committed to growing, innovating, and providing the highest standard of care for every animal that comes through our doors.
