Kids On The Go

A nonprofit organization

Kids On The Go is a non-profit organization founded in 1999 that provides free physical, occupational, speech and recreational therapy services for children with special needs, ages 3-17, during the summer as well as during the school year.  Our mission is to recognize and facilitate the goals of children with special needs and to further develop their current skills through therapeutic and wellness programs for the children and their families. Our vision is to provide a safe environment that will foster opportunities for growth and inclusion and provide valuable resources for our community. Our overarching goal is to provide free therapy services and other specialized services to children with special needs so they can maintain their academic achievement levels and improve their overall well-being.

Most children with disabilities or special needs struggle to keep up with their peers in schools, face other social and physical challenges outside of school, and aren’t able to participate in activities that most children take for granted – such as sports or the arts. Most families cannot afford to pay $115-$400 per therapy session and feel powerless as they watch their child struggle. KOTG was established to address the need for accessible services that maintain or improve skill levels by pairing kids with professional therapists and offering classes that stimulate and enrich their young lives with therapeutic, artistic, athletic, and social experiences. In 2018, KOTG expanded from summer programming and began offering an array of classes year-round to provide opportunities for special needs kids to participate in the many pursuits that “typical” learners enjoy – such as circuit training, boxing, adaptive dance and theatre, cooking, robotics, yoga.

Since its founding in 1999, we have provided services to more than 5,000 Metro Detroit children.

The free programming provided by KOTG is not offered anywhere else in the tri-county area. Children with disabilities ages 3-17 are welcome to participate in KOTG programs, regardless of their individual challenges or limitations.  KOTG is intended for those children who do not qualify for Extended School Year services provided by intermediate school districts, which offers some services for children who lose two-thirds of the skills they acquire during the regular school year and who need six to nine weeks to regain those skills. (Most children with disabilities do not qualify based on these criteria, according to the Special Education Guide.) Families can choose from variety of specialized KOTG sessions, depending upon their child’s specific needs and interests. We serve children who face a broad spectrum of physical and developmental challenges, including autism, Down’s syndrome, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, Fragile X syndrome, and hypotonia, among others.
