Incorporated in 1867, the town of Bellevue has a rich history that dates back to when the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania granted a tract of land known as Sidney Bottom to Hugh H. Brackenridge of Pittsburgh. Adjacent to it was Sandy Bottom, granted to James Robinson of Allegheny Town. These two areas, collectively spanning 640 acres, now form the eastern part of Bellevue. This land, originally referred to as the “Depreciation Lands,” was offered to war-weary soldiers returning from the Revolution, providing them with a fresh start after the hardships of war. Today, Bellevue covers 1.1 square miles and is home to approximately 8,300 residents. It stands out as one of the few areas in Pittsburgh that still boasts an old-fashioned business district at its heart. This district features a blend of parks, recreational sites, shops, restaurants, banks, specialty stores, churches, and schools, creating a vibrant and bustling community atmosphere. Bellevue is also known for its walkable community. Many stores, the Bayne Library, and Bayne Park are within easy walking distance of numerous homes and apartments, fostering a sense of community and convenience that is rare in today’s world. This pedestrian-friendly environment, combined with its historic charm, makes Bellevue a unique and inviting place to live and visit.
