826michigan is a youth writing and literacy organization that reaches over 4,500 K-12 students each year: through our free programs, students don’t just learn to write—they learn to express themselves, think critically, develop communication skills, and build confidence beyond the classroom. 

One of the most meaningful experiences for students is becoming published authors. Through initiatives like the Young Authors Book Project, students write for real audiences on topics that matter to them. Their work is featured in Detroit institutions such as the Detroit Historical Society, Belle Isle Aquarium, and local media outlets. This helps students understand the real-world value of writing and builds skills like problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication. Most importantly, it shows them they are capable of success. As we tell our students, if you can become a published author by age 10, just imagine what you will accomplish next?!

For 22 years, 826michigan has provided students a platform to share their voices and see themselves as capable, confident students who will become capable, confident adults—making a lasting impact on both the students and the city of Detroit.
