My father-in-law, Roy Townsend, founded 13 Forever, a Michigan-based non-profit organization, after my brother-in-law, Justin Townsend, passed away from cancer at only 13 years old.
What started as Justin having a migraine quickly spiraled into a glioblastoma diagnosis, an ultra rare and aggressive form of brain cancer. Days later, Justin underwent brain surgery. Weeks later, Justin was receiving intensive chemoradiation at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. A mere 11 months after diagnosis, Justin died.
Before Justin passed, Roy promised him that he would do his best to ensure no other family experiences the indescribable heartbreak of losing a child to cancer. For this reason, several years ago, Roy founded 13 Forever. Since then, the organization has hosted numerous events, such as golf outings, cornhole events, and benefit dinners, to raise money for those suffering from pediatric cancer, and those fighting on their behalf. With the tens of thousands of dollars raised to date, 13 Forever has contributed to worthy initiatives such as purchasing medical science equipment needed for promising research, hosting families at the Ronald McDonald House while their child receives treatment, and helping terminally ill children make a wish through the Rainbow Connection.
